RIP – Platypus Man (1957-2007)

March 11, 2007

Comedian/actor Richard Jeni has died, apparent victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Sad news.  I caught his standup act once.  A very funny guy.  But doesn’t it seem sometimes to be the lot of the comedian to have a life tinged with tragedy?  We’ve lost so many before their time.  Drugs, depression, disease, these are among the personal demons of the clown.  I know from personal experience that if you’re driven to get up in front of people in hopes of making them laugh, then there’s something just a little wrong with you.  The jokes, the standup, the act, the goofiness, that’s sometimes therapy, a way of coping with what ails you.  However, often it is not enough and the excess or scandal or simple self-destruction takes over and defines you.  It’s unwelcome and unfortunate but it is also not to suggest the comedian should be pitied.  If someone has the talent to make you laugh, count that – and them – as a blessing.  For as Nicolas Chamfort wrote, “The most wasted day of all is that during which we have not laughed.”  Regardless of the end, we must remember the laughter.  Remember the laughter – and never forget the clown.

Rest in peace, Richard Jeni.  You go on after Kaufman, right before Kinison.
